Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About Golden Showers but Were Afraid to Ask!

Water sports, otherwise know as golden showers, (also “urolagnia,” “urophilia”, “urine play”, or “piss play”), is a sexual fetish and involves the act of urinating on another person for the purposes of erotic gratification and sexual pleasure.

Unlike water sports which are sporting activities carried out in and on the water, like boating or jet skiing, water sports as a sexual practice or in BDSM, refers to sensual or erotic play involving bodily fluids, or more specifically urination. Between 1.3-10% of people get off on watersports, with at least 39% having participated it in at some point.

wa·ter sports

noun

    1. sports that are carried out on water, such as waterskiing and windsurfing.
    2. sexual activity involving urination. Slang. sexual activity that typically involves urinating on or being urinated on by others.

– Oxford Dictionary

The term, Urolagnia, has origins in the Greek language (from ouron – urine, and lagneia – lust).[i] Drinking urine is known as urophagia, although this refers to the “consumption of urine regardless of whether the context is sexual.”[ii]

Urethral Eroticism, is a “Psychoanalytical term for sexual feelings associated with urination and the urethral-opening and fantasies derived therefrom.”[iii]

Urinating as a form of sex play is not only a human activity. Some animals also indulge in water sports including porcupines, female kobs (antelopes), male Patagonian mara (large rodents). Many animals spray urine as a form of scent-marking.

Undinism, another term for watersports, was derived by the British sexologist Havelock Ellis from the name for mythological water nymphs, which is “an obsession with or a sexual pleasure derived from water, esp urination and urine.”[iv]

Most fetish activities concerning the use of bodily waste including urine, are considered by to be “hardcore”, taboo, or edgeplay.

What is Omorashi?

Because omorashi is such a large and diverse subculture of urophilia, I hereby give it its own section.

Omorashi, sometimes abbreviated as “omo”, is a fetish subculture of urolagnia in Japan, and is the act getting sexual aroused from trying to hold your pee when “the need to urinate is urgent” and one has a full bladder; or by watching someone who needs to pee have an “accident”; or, making another hold their pee in D/s play.

A variation of omorashi is omorashi yagai, which means “to wet oneself outdoors (or publicly),” sometimes with the intention of not getting caught (yagai hōnyō), or, for the express purpose of getting caught. Omutsu omorashi is wetting one’s diaper, similar to a diaper fetish, but with emphasis on urination rather than the diaper or age play itself. Skirt omorashi, (sukāto omorashi) is the act of urinating while wearing skirt and often involves upskirt viewing, with young women dressed as school girls or in uniform.

Omorashi is popular in fetish films known as pink films, as well as fetishized game shows in which contestants must compete in various urine-holding challenges.[v] Omorashi is also popular in anime and manga cartoons, magazines, video games and fandom figurines.

What Types of Water Sports Play is There?

In addition to going by many names, urophilia encompasses many different sexual or eroticized practices including drinking pee.

Other types of waterplay sports include:

  • Wetting: wetting yourself, peeing in your pants, undies or diapers, or bed wetting and as an erotic activity, or form of erotic humiliation
  • Peeing on your play partner
  • Peeing during sexual intercourse
  • Consuming urine during sexual play
  • Peeing in your partner’s vagina or anus during sex
  • Peeing and diaper play (aka diaper fetish) or infantilism
  • Peeing on each other in the shower or bath
  • Exhibitionist and voyeuristic elements of watching or having someone else watch you pee
  • Peeing on someone’s face while positioned over the toilet and drinking it (Human urinal)
  • Peeing in a wine glass, shoe or other container then drinking it
  • Squatting over someone and peeing on their genitals or face
  • Bathing in urine
  • Smelling urine-soaked clothing or body parts
  • Omorashi: arousal from holding your pee
  • Peeing secretly in public
  • Pussing: erotic peeing in front of your partner a public space or toilet
  • Salirophilia is arousal from getting someone wet and messy, in this case with pee
  • Anything that involves pee and erotic play

According to the French psychiatrist Auguste Tardieu, urine fetishes may also be eroticized by ‘renifleurs’, or sniffers, “who would loiter outside female public toilets or skulk at the back doors of theatres in the hope of catching the scent of women’s urine.”[vi]

How Popular Are Water Sports?

Drinking urine for spiritual, cultural and health reasons (urine therapy) has been a thing, for like, forever.[vii] The popularity of urolagnia, however, is another story.

It is unknown how popular water sport fetishes are, but 36.52% have admitted to having participated in it, according to one researcher.[viii] In a “2017 nationwide Great British Sex survey, watersports (or urolagnia) was ranked ninth in popularity among sexual fetishes in the UK.”[ix] Other experts in the kink community say that golden showers are very popular, and there are “piss parties full of folks who want to explore this.””[x]

Pornhub found–after it was leaked that former President Trump was into “piss play” (pee tape scandal)–that searches containing “Golden Shower” increased by “289% compared to the usual daily average.”[xi] They also noted that men, aged 65+ were most likely to search for “golden showers”, and that men search for it 24% more than women.

Most popular searched terms included “piss”, “pissing”, “pee”, “golden shower”, and “caught pissing”, in that order with “watersports” ranking 6th. Other interesting search terms included: “pissing lesbians”, “Asian golden shower”, “femdom pissing”, and “lesbian watersports”. Back in the 70s, pee porn was very popular and many porn stars have done it[xii]!

Where do piss enthusiasts live?

In the US, pee-pee play is most popular in the North East, in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts. Worldwide, countries where urolagnia is prevalent include the Czech Republic, followed by Australia, Switzerland and Germany.

As far as sexual fantasies go, Researchers at the University of Montreal found that 3.5% of women had fantasies around erotic peeing, while 10% of men were into it.[xiii]

How Long Have People Been Engaging in Water Sports?

I’m going to guesstimate that golden showers and water sports have been around since the pre-cavemen days, and that we, like animals, sprayed our territory, which could have possibly included peeing on other pre-humanoids, and thus forming a fetish around that. However, that is just my presumption, and is not backed by any solid caveman evidence. Although we know that our ancient humans carved Neolithic dildos and probably enjoyed doggy style sex, their other sexual habits remain unknown.

Havelock Ellis, a British physician who also studied human sexual behavior, and author of the seven-volume Studies in the Psychology of Sex (1897–1928)—a comprehensive and ground-breaking encyclopaedia of human sexual biology, behavior, and attitudes—was the first noted to discuss urolagnia openly and admitted to having the fetish. “He traced it back to washing his mother’s back while she peed.”[xiv]

However, in recent history, golden showers date back to 1943, and was defined as “a shared act of urine fetishism; the act of urination by one person on another for sexual gratification.”[xv]

Why do People Like Water Sports?

I don’t know. Why do people like pickles?

Video: BSDM 101: Watersports

No-one really knows what makes other people tick sexually, but according to a study in the Journal of Sex Research, nearly half of the participants (44.5 percent) “expressed the desire to engage in fetishistic behavior, while just over one-quarter (26.3 percent) had actually done it at some point in the past.”

Fetishes or paraphilias are defined as “the experience of intense sexual arousal to atypical objects, situations, fantasies, behaviors, or individuals.”[xvi] Some studies indicate that paraphilias are caused by “possible prenatal neurodevelopmental correlation” and therefore are genetic. Others believe fetishes are behavioral, and evolve as a learned experience which are “conditioned early in life, during an experience that pairs the paraphilic stimulus with intense sexual arousal” which is later reinforced by masturbation fantasies. Thus, the object or behaviors becomes a trigger for arousal again and again, formulating a fetish.

Justin Lehmiller, Ph.D., a sex educator and research psychologist at Harvard University, says that another reason people get fetishes are due to the gross-out theory.

“When you’re in a high state of sexual arousal, your disgust impulse weakens… It’s almost like a heightened state of arousal changes your perception of the world… And that changed perception might lead you to incorporate different things into your sexual acts.”[xvii] Lehmiller explains.

The Pavlovian Theory suggests that we can form “sexual associations around random objects”, by repeated experiences of incarnality or embodiment, with these objects while sexually aroused, so our brain links that object to a particular sexual desire. A sexual fetish with pee, therefore, may occur when a person comes in contact with urine accompanied by sexual excitement, thereby reinforcing the fetish.

The Compensation theory hypothesizes that some people can’t fulfill their normal desires due to shame, self-doubt, embarrassment, or fear, therefore “miss out on socially acceptable sexual gratification, and compensate by getting off with inanimate objects, that won’t intimidate or reject them.”[xviii]

Dr. Doe of Youtube’s Sexplanations theorizes that people could develop fetishes by trying to repress them, which makes them think about them even more, called Ironic Process Theory. Kind of like when you are on a diet and try not to think about eating a chocolate cake, which then becomes an obsession to eat said cake.

Finally, another strange and far-out theory is that urine fetishes are vestigial, meaning they are leftover impulses from our evolution as a biological urge to lick the genitals for cleaning or nutrition, (like dogs do to their puppies), that are reactivated by a genetic mutation to make one desire to ingest urine.

None of the above theories have any conclusive data, however, so it is anybody’s guess. Fetishes in fact, may be quite “normal”, and are just a part of healthy human sexual appetites. One thing is certain though, according to Lehmiller, “contrary to popular belief, most people with fetishes are perfectly psychologically healthy.”

Some reasons why people enjoy erotic water sports may include:

  • In BDSM, as an act of humiliation between a Dominant and submissive.
  • As an act of erotic intimacy between sexual partners.
  • It feels good, like a sexual release, especially after holding it for a long time. “Ah, what a relief!”
  • It feels good, as in sensation: warm and wet and works as extra lubricant.
  • Some people also enjoy freezing it and eating it like popsicles, as a tasty hot weather treat. But I guess they’d ten be called “pissicles”?[xix]

Pertaining to watersports specifically, Lehmiller suggests that is it a rather uncommon fetish, with only 1.4% of men having an interest in it. Thus, “urophilia is something that is primarily the subject of case reports, as opposed to large-scale, systematic research. As such, our understanding of the psychological origins of urophilia is rather limited… it would be wise not to leap to conclusions about why a given person is into urophilia—there are likely a lot of potential explanations.”[xx]

How to Take Part in Water Sports

To take part in watersports, first you have to find a partner who is into it. Although you certainly can drink your own piss if that’s your sort of thing. If you are very flexible you may even be able to pee on yourself! My brother accidentally peed in his mouth while laying down and taking a bath one day. But, that’s another story.

I have tried water sports several times over the years, and it was enjoyable in a fun kind of naughty way. I used to enjoy peeing on guys in the shower, and then laughing my ass off at their reaction. I also peed on a guy right after sex one time, by squatting over him and peeing on his belly.

The guys I did this to seemed to like it, perhaps because it was unusual, unexpected, and rather mischievous, like the actions of a naughty little girl. Maybe even because it is taboo, deviant, messy and “dirty” kind of sexual play. IDK, but I never got any complaints.

That said, I would highly recommend getting consent before pissing on someone.

Sexologist, Dr. Ava Cadell cautions: “Talk about your desire for a golden shower and get your partner’s consent.”

It is bad manners to do any type of sexual act on someone without their permission, not to mention against the law. So, ask first. Makes sense!

How do I bring up the conversation surrounding Golden Showers?

Bring it up casually, during a regular conversation with your lover or play partner and see what they think. You could say, “I read about a fetish called golden showers, have you ever heard of it”, or “what do you think of it?” Then judge their reaction as to whether the conversation is going anywhere, or they are weirded out.

You can also share your fantasies online with other like-minded enthusiasts. Places like Fetlife may be a good place to start with over 3900 kinksters interested in “pee”, and 2980 related fetishes including peeing, women peeing, peeing on someone, pee drinking, bukkake pee, drinking pee from the source, peeing on your face, pee play, human pee toilet, hot pee on my pussy, my ass filled with your pee and cum, daddy peeing in my diaper, peeing my pants, panty peeing, peeing in public, tickling til’ you pee, Daddy peeing on me, Daddy making me pee my diapers, being pee’d on in the shower, and much more.

Who knew there were so many fetishes related to golden showers?

There are also BDSM dating apps for people into pissy play including two popular ones at these sites: BDSM.com and Fetster.com.

If you are more private and just want to fulfill your fantasy in secret, there is lots of porn, videos and erotic reading materials that caters to this kind of fetish.

How to Play with Water Sports Safely

Urine is a body fluid, so like semen, and blood, it can carry diseases, STDs, STIs, and cause infections. This includes HIV, herpes, hepatitis, chlamydia and gonorrhea. Urine can also contain “bacterial, fungal, and viral infections[xxi] such as “cytomegalovirus, a virus that can cause flu-like symptoms… [which you can contract by getting] contaminated pee in your face or in an open wound.”[xxii]

Dr. Ava Cadell also advises, “Avoid pee play on any cuts or sores as urine can burn and be unsafe.” Also avoid mucus membranes as well.

Medical New Today suggests that while drinking pee is mainly safe, as it contains 95% water, it does have some risks. These include bacteria inflections like Salmonella, Pseudomonas, Shigella, Escherichia coli, or E. coli, and Staphylococcus.”[xxiv] Also, be careful of blood in the urine, which can be a sign of a urinary track infection.

However, urine is less risky than vaginal, anal and oral sex, according to the Daily Beast[xxv] and other bodily fluids like blood and semen, as far as contracting sexually transmitted infections. Some people even think it is healthy to drink pee, which is a whole new health fad.

Chief Medical Advisor for the American Sexual Health Association, Dr. Hunter Handsfield notes that “sexual watersports are unlikely to spread sexually transmitted infections because the liquid is incapable of carrying the ‘large amounts of causative bacteria and viruses needed.’”[xxvi]

Make sure you are fluid bonded if you want to practice piss-play with a partner.

Do watersports in a place where there is a drain, like a toilet, shower stall or tub to avoid mess and the awful smell of rank urine as it stews for several days. “The shower is the most hygienic place for golden showers, but be careful not to slip and fall,” says Dr. Ava.

You can also use diapers, sex blankets made for sexual liquids (squirting), or doggy training pads if not using the shower.

Make sure you are very well hydrated, to water down the urine, as I have heard that strong pee can have an acrid flavor.

As with semen and female ejaculation, you are what you eat, so try drinking pineapple juice or another fruity cocktail, or even eating watermelons or cucumbers, all of which are very hydrating and will improve the flavor. Of course, drinking lots of water is always a good plan as well.

Speaking of you are what you imbibe, substances like alcohol and drugs can be transmitted through your urine, so think about that before imbibing unless you want to become piss-drunk (is that a thing? Okay is now!), or high on pee.

“It’s a bad idea after you’ve drunk coffee, eaten asparagus or a lot of kale, and definitely after beetroot… You’ll be trying to have a wet and sexy time, and without fail you will end up freaking out about why you may be pissing blood, and by the time you remember the mood is ruined and your partner is consoling you and has lost their erection.”—Vice.com

Don’t pee in her vagina. Causes nasty infections like BV or a yeast inflection, which aint sexy.

If you want to pee up someone’s butt, remember that pissing up the bum can act as an enema, so be prepared for poop.

Dr. Ava Cadell also offers this advice when considering getting into water sports:

“Discuss what part of your body or your partner’s body is going to be peed on. Have a safe word, other than STOP in case you want to stop. RED is associated with a traffic light color to stop and is often used in BDSM play.”

Watersports Sex Positions

Over at “Sex Talk About”[xxvii], the authors have some interesting names for golden shower positions.

The Golden Shower

Usually as humiliation or domination act, the golden shower is performed with one person sitting or standing as they pee upon the submissive partner who is kneeling, or laying down below them.

The Fountain of Venus

This is accomplished with the vulva-owner on their back as their partner goes down on them while they piss a “Fountain of Venus” in their mouth.

The Spitting Snake

This is the opposite of the Fountain of Venus, in which the penis-owner rubs their penis over their partner’s face during oral, then releases their bladder for their partner to consume.

Flooding the Cave

This is when a penis-owner urinates in their partner’s ass after ejaculation while spooning.

Self Peeing

In this solo position you lay with legs propped against the wall and try to urinate on your face or in your mouth, drinking your own pee-pee.

Is it Safe to Drink Women’s Pee?

I read this  question in another article during my research, so thought it deserved an answer.

Unlike man-pee, women’s pee is completely sterile and safe to drink. Okay, completely being sarcastic here, because pee, is pee, is pee. It doesn’t matter who it comes from—man, woman, animal—pee can be unsafe to drink especially if a person is sick, or, if they carry a virus. And, pee is NOT sterile. That’s a myth. It contains “whole swaths of bacteria”, even in so-called ‘healthy urine’.”

What Does Pee Taste Like?

Glad you asked!

Physicians, since the time of Hippocrates have practiced tasting urine (as well as evaluating the color and smell) as a way to analyze and diagnose disease. The practice—called uroscopy or uromancy—could also “predict the future.”[xxviii] Tints and flavors of piss differ due to the mixture of “inorganic salts and organic compounds that the body excretes as soluble waste.”

So, pee is 95% water, salts and other organic material, that is fairly safe to consume from a toxicity point of view, provided the person it comes from has no illness, bacterial infections or diseases. However, it does contain some toxins in the form of urea, which gives pee the characteristic smell and color.

And, according to “Urine Flavor Wheels” (no, I didn’t make this up), “urine is astringent, sweet, white and sharp,” and “diabetic piss tastes wonderfully sweet as if it were imbued with honey or sugar.”[xxix] Other types (yes, there are many flavors of pee!) include the “very sweet, cold, sticky, opaque, like the juice of cane sugar” variety.

So, Yum!

However, you may not want to try Hastimeha, which apparently is “turbid” and tastes “a mad elephant”.

Conclusion

So, there you have it peeps! Peeing on people can be fun, erotic, naughty, hot, sexy, and even warm and fuzzy. Just follow safety precautions, and let your desires take you to the land of golden showers! And, if you’re not athletic like me, you can say at least there is one sport you enjoy and are good at!

What are your thoughts about water sports? Have you tried them? Or maybe want to?
